Healthy Baking And a KitchenAid Mixer Giveaway

Healthy Baking For The Holidays is possible!

Desserts don’t need to be something to be feared or despised because those may cause weight gain.

As we talk about in our new book coming in 2016, what may cause weight gain is certain types of sweeteners as well as types of flour.

Most dessert recipes call for mounds of sugar or sweeteners that make it way too sweet to be palatable much less healthy. Usually the taste will improve if you cut the amount of sweetener by a third and replace it with a natural sweetner like honey or real maple syrup. Sometimes a ripe banana will do the trick.

Follow us on Pinterest to see the delicious list of healthy desserts we have assembled.

Get ready to make some delicious desserts this Holiday Season!

Love some sleep? Do this!

The secret for a good night’s sleep.

The worst torture is laying completely exhausted in bed yet unable to sleep.  The minutes tick by slowly and you know that tomorrow you will be a zombie without some rest.

Here are some helpful and well proven secrets to get a good night sleep.

  • Hydrate thru the day
  • Don’t eat right before bed
  • Skip that dinner dessert
  • Relax before bed
  • Prepare your bedroom for a good night
  • Take the secret supplement

If you drink plenty of water during the day, your body will have the fuel needed to process all the stress of the day and properly absorb nutrients.  During the night, your body is designed to fast and rest.   If not, you might be getting up during the night thirsty and hot, as your body screams at you for some water.

Eating right before bed puts your body to work.  It needs to digest and process that heavy meal you fed it at eight o’clock at night.  Your body is on full alert mode.  Your tummy might feel bloated and you might not get the deep sleep you crave.

Eat at least two hours before bed.  Preferably three hours before bed time.

As you might be well aware of, sugar is not all that beneficial to our optimal health. However, it’s nice to have a little sweet here and there.  Cookies are my favorite!

Choosing the right time for dessert is essential.  Eat it during the day time so your body has the opportunity to burn the extra calories and you can effectively use the short lived ‘energy jolt’ that a bit of sugar might give you. Otherwise, at night it might keep you up for a bit.

Writting a long to do list right before bed is not the best idea.  Write it in the afternoon or right after dinner.  Thinking of all the tasks undone and all the projects to finish right before bed gets your stress levels up.  Stress causes cortisol to be dispersed into our bodies.  Cortisol has the opposite effect of melatonin: it wakes you up.

Instead, focus on things that relax you.  Put some soothing music on.  Take a relaxing bath or read a good book in bed to get you sleepy.  And as soon as you feel sleepy, turn the light off and go to sleep.

Your environment can either stress you or relax you.  If your bedroom floor has piles of clothes strung around, everytime you come into your bed to sleep is going to stress you.  It makes you think of all the things yet to do.  At the least, move your piles into another room.  It can wait there until you can tackle that project.

Have a soft light for bed time.  Harsh lightning wakes us up. That is what the sunlight is meant to do.  So at night, put soft lightning on as you prepare for bed.

Make sure you have it dark once you turn the lights off.  Residual lights from computers, cell phones, and even alarm clocks might disturb your sleep and keep you from deep rest.

As you probably have heard, taking melatonin before bed daily may help your body regulate and help you get sleepy.  Recently, some articles have question its effectiveness and safety.

I have used it in the past and found it both helpful and effective.  However, recently I have discovered a well known but unappreciated mineral that gets you right to sleep.  Any guesses?

Magnesium!  Yes, mangnesium has a ton of health benefits but one of those is that helps your muscles and your body relax, curtails the effects of cortisol and regulates hormones.  And in the end, that helps you get a relax sleep.

Recently, studies published related magnesium deficiency to insomnia, muscle cramps and even restless leg syndrome. And it is estimated that millions of americans may be suffering of these symptoms because of a deficiency of magnesium.

Taking magnesium I no longer get woken up by muscle spams.  Wohoo!!

Consult with a medical professional as to which dose is best for you and make sure you are not taking any medications that are contraindicated against magensium supplements. Be sure to consult a doctor before taking any magnesium if you have kidney problems or heart disesase.

Good night all!

Miley’s Loss is Their Gain

A letter to Miley and every young woman with big dreams.

Dear Miley,

As Hannah Montana’s time came to an end, I had great hopes for you.

Hope that you would be unique like a diamond found in the midst of ordinary stones.  Hope that you would be a beauty that neither Hollywood nor fame or money could taint.

I hoped you be the one that would know her value and true worth; a talent that didn’t have to copy anyone else because she had nothing to proof.  A classic beauty with a voice so beautiful that doesn’t need accolades.

And hoped you’d be the one that didn’t need to pose on the cover of a nude magazine because you can be sexy without revealing anything; one that would grow in beauty and class as she came of age.

But hope has turned into shock.

Who deceived you Miley?  Who said you were not enough?

Who set you up to betray yourself for an image?

You believe you are ruthless and defiant yet you have fallen into the hands of thieves.

Craftily, they fitted you into their mold.  They turned you into spectacle of yet another starlet that helps their ratings at the cost of herself.

With a rebellious pose, you uncover your body for an exploitative magazine.  Then, with a defiant sneer on your face, you claim your pin up as your trophy.  You think it proves you are now a woman, definitely, not a ‘good girl’.  Yet you have just been robbed.  You lay uncovered from lustful eyes.

Who deceived you into believing you needed to strip off boundaries that protected you?

Those that lied to you are profiting from you.  Your loss is their gain.

Let them not deceive you any longer. You are not free. You are still doing as you’ve been told. And you are making them richer along the ride.

Maybe in time, you will look back and say, it is this time of pain, drugs, rage and rebellion that I need to put behind and not my childhood memories.  I only hope that you would do so quickly. Quickly, before your body, mind and will become enslaved to someone else’s will: whoever owns the substance that possesses you.

Maybe in time, you will recognize that thousands of girls and young women that adore you may have been deceived with you.  As they follow you, they might be lured into an industry that exploits them with seductive poses and nude photo shoots.  They will be told that they can become famous just as Miley was.

“Stick and stones….”  We all know that phrase is not true.  We need good reminders that our words have an enormous impact over our children.

There are so many studies that proof positive parenting and positive words are healing, edifying and uplifting to children’s self esteem and even brain development.

So every time we speak to our children, let our words be life, grace, truth and edifying.

Reduce Pesticide Exposure

EATING WELL ON A BUDGET: Avoiding pesticides like the plague PART II

Can you wash pesticides off of produce?

The simple and quick answer is: NO!

Best way to avoid pesticides in your food is to buy organic or grow them yourself.  If that is not possible, then at least avoid the 14 most contaminated veggies and produce.  Buy those organic.  Find the list, here from a previous post: “Toxic Food”.

Reduce Pesticide Exposure

Steps to reduce pesticide exposure

Pesticides are not your friend.  If you must buy conventionally grown and pesticide sprayed produce, at least attempt to reduce your toxin exposure by following these steps:

  • Avoid the 14 most contaminated produce featured in this list.
  • Peel fruits and vegetables
  • Wash your veggies and fruits
  • Make your own veggie and fruit wash

A large amount of pesticide tends to reside in the outer skin of produce so anytime you buy, let’s say… cucumbers, peel them.  Unless organic, don’t consume them with the peel on. Keep in mind though: vegetables are not just sprayed with pesticides; they soak them up.  Root veggies like potatoes are highly contaminated even if you peel them. Any fruits with thin skins will have pesticides inside too.

Washing veggies and fruit

Most pesticides are not water soluble.

You can’t wash all pesticide residue off of produce with water. However, some studies have said you can reduce a percentage of toxic residues if you rinse produce in warm running water for at least 30 seconds.

However, there are two other approaches that seem more effective.

Wash your veggies with soap.  When I first heard this advice, I was disgusted! I didn’t want to have any soap residue or smell on what i eat.  But truth is – those ‘healthy’ veggies had been showered with chemicals long before they got to my table.  But be careful!  Make sure your soap is an organic, natural soap! Otherwise, you will be just adding more toxins to your food.  Most dishwashing soaps are loaded with artificial colors, carcinogenics and neurotoxins.  So buy a natural soap such as Better Life dish soap.  Find it here.

Simply rinsing produce with water is not enough.  Follow these directions and you have a better chance of reducing the amount of toxic pesticides you might ingest along with your veggie serving for the day.

Soak your vegetables in a solution of vinegar and water for at least a few minutes. The solution is 1 part vinegar and 3 parts water. You can use white vinegar or apple cider vinegar.

Or soak vegetable in a solution of sea salt and water.

EATING WELL ON A BUDGET: Avoiding pesticides like the plague

In our previous post, we talked about how pesticides have altered our food supply to make it toxic to our bodies.  Conventionally grown produce becomes toxic because of the high content of pesticide residue that remains after harvesting and that won’t go away by washing it.  Anyone for a salad with a side of toxins or possible carcinogenics?

Even if you don’t have the bucks to buy organic produce exclusively, consider buying organic at least those 14 items mentioned in our previous post “Toxic Food.”  The Environmental Watch Group (EWG) found up to 88 different pesticide residues in those 14 produce mentioned.

No perfect mom budget

SAVE MONEY: Produce you may not have to buy organic.

As an exception, the produce listed below have fewer pesticide residues.

If you can’t afford to buy everything organic, you can buy conventionally grown produce from the list below.  These were found by EWG to have very few toxic residues.

  • Onions
  • Sweet corn* read warning below
  • Pineapples
  • Avocado
  • Cabbage
  • Sweet peas
  • Asparagus
  • Mangoes
  • Eggplant
  • Kiwi
  • Cantaloupe (domestic)
  • Sweet Potatoes
  • Grapefruit
  • Watermelon
  • Mushrooms

* Sweet corn samples contained relatively few pesticide residues on  its surface.  However, because most corn in the U.S. is grown from GMO seeds (or has been contaminated by them) it is recommended to buy organic or certified as GMO-free produce.  With GMO’s every bite is guaranteed to contain pesticides.  See our post: ” Why GMO’s are bad for you!”

Happy eating!

TOXIC FOOD: Avoid buying contaminated veggies or fruits!

‘Pesticide-Happy Food’.

When farmers and produce workers have to wear masks to apply pesticides to herbs, fruits, and vegetables you know there is something wrong with the picture.

Pesticides are not only toxic for the soil, the plants, and the bees.  There are poisonous to us!

The pesticides remain on the fruit, herbs, and vegetables after harvesting and even after you wash them.  Our gut flora is especially vulnerable to these toxic pesticide residues.

toxic food - No Perfect Mom

We try to eat as much organic produce as much as we can.  Sometimes prices can be a bit outrageous. But hey! is better for our health.

However, if we  have to choose between conventionally grown and organic, the produce listed below is so saturated with pesticides we definitely buy it only organic.

The following 14 produce contain the most pesticide residues of most all vegetables and fruits available in US market.  According to EWG’s Shopper’s Guide to Pesticides™, avoid these to reduce your exposure to toxic chemicals.

Listed from worst to less residue:

  • Apples
  • Strawberries
  • Grapes
  • Celery
  • Peaches
  • Spinach
  • Sweet bell peppers
  • Nectarines
  • Cucumbers
  • Potatoes
  • Cherry tomatoes
  • Hot peppers
  • Kale/collard greens
  • Summer squash
